Leaves, Stems, and Study: A HORT 220 Exploration

EVL 2nd FL Study Rooms
Dec 2025 - Spring 2026

In the 2025 Fall semester, Professor Sven Verlinden's WVU General Horticulture (HORT 220) class explored the Evansdale campus to locate and identify a variety of plants. Along the way, students learned the strengths and limitations of different plant identification apps, gaining hands-on experience in observing, documenting, and classifying plant species.

The plants were then carefully dried, pressed, and mounted — resulting in the beautiful display you see here. These works will be on view in the Evansdale Library study rooms, where visitors can appreciate the combination of science, observation, and artistry involved in horticulture.

This display is a wonderful example of horticulture as both an art and a practice — blending the precision of plant identification with the creativity of presentation, and highlighting the skill and care required in garden cultivation and management. It’s also a testament to how learning in the field can be transformed into a tangible, visual experience for the broader community.
