Looking at Appalachia: HOPE

West Virginia based photographer Roger May collaboratively curates this exhibit of crowd-sourced images from amateur and professional photographers across Appalachia, broadening the contemporary definitions of the region and its people.

The first Looking at Appalachia exhibit opened in June of 2016 at the WVU Downtown Campus Library with 73 selections from 2014. Some of the images provoked controversy for the subjects and objects depicted in the images which May said was intended to start a conversation. In 2017, the Downtown Campus Library displayed 20 new images from 2015-16 alongside 20 images from the original exhibition of photographs from 2014, in a concentrated light that had never been exhibited this way before.

For the latest installment at Health Sciences Library, May selected 20 images from the 2014 photographs around the idea of HOPE, to complement the Health Sciences Quality of Life initiatives. The photographs will be on view through March 10, 2019.

This exhibit is coordinated by the WVU Art in the Libraries Program in partnership with the Health Sciences Center.
