Curated by Alexia Whitehair, Art in the Libraries Intern, WVU Anthropology and Art History & Museum Professions Major

Originally formed as an 8-member, all-male ROTC band in 1901, WVU’s “Band of Pride” now comprises over 300 members. Throughout its 124-year history, the Mountaineer Marching Band has become a staple of West Virginia University. Eager eyes look to them to bring energy, entertainment, and, most importantly, pride to the University throughout the year. Music in Morgantown: A History of the WVU Band of Pride explores the finer details of notable band directors, uniforms, and gamedays.

The exhibit, “Music in Morgantown: A History of the WVU Band of Pride,” is located in the Downtown Library entryway cases until March 2026.

Using West Virginia & Regional History Center archives, Art in the Libraries intern and WVU Anthropology and Art History & Museum Professions major, Alexia Whitehair, curated this exhibit to explore the finer details of notable band directors, uniforms, and game days using photos, old uniforms, and other ephemera.

Originally formed as an 8-member, all-male Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) band in 1901, WVU’s “Band of Pride” now comprises over 300 members. Throughout its 124-year history, the Mountaineer Marching Band has become a staple of the University. Eager eyes look to them to bring energy, entertainment, and, most importantly, pride to WVU throughout the year.

"My time with Sally Brown and Art in the Libraries affirmed my desire to pursue a curation-focused career in a museum one day,” said Alexia. “It provided me with experience in transforming a concept into an actualized exhibition, as well as the processes behind the installation and preparation of an exhibition on a smaller and more relaxed scale."
