Photography by Betty Rivard

The West Virginia University Libraries purchased 69 of Rivard's photographs in 2015. Most of the photographs hang in a corridor leading to staff work areas in the Wise Library, a part of the Downtown Campus Library. Some of the photos grace work spaces at all three of the WVU Libraries: Downtown, Evansdale, and Health Sciences. While Rivard's subjects include landscapes, streetscapes, architecture, and community life, most of those in the University Libraries are landscapes.

Betty Rivard is a fine art landscape photographer dedicated to capturing the beauty and individuality of everyday scenes in West Virginia and beyond. A lifelong lover of photography, she became a professional photographer after retiring from her work as a social worker and planner for the State of West Virginia in 2000. Since then, she has received numerous grants and a West Virginia Fellowship in Photography, with her work featured in solo, group, and juried exhibitions throughout the state. Rivard also curates and coordinates photography exhibits with fellow West Virginia artists. In 2012, she published New Deal Photographs of West Virginia, 1934–1943 through West Virginia University Press, a collection of over 150 images from the Farm Security Administration Project. She continues to promote these historic images through traveling mini-exhibits and community partnerships. In her current work, she combines her photographs with narrative text in a poetic format, offering personal reflections on the scenes she captures.
